Participation Trophies – Right or Wrong?
Posted by Corinna McNally on
Being in the Trophy business of course I am going to stay right – right?
Yes, but let me explain a little…
I have seen this argument pop up every now and again and it seems to be more and more lately.
Participation trophies are NOT awarding mediocrity or the losers!
A participation trophy awards commitment and perseverance to stay with that sport/subject for the whole period of time.
It also encourages children to participate again and again.
Participation trophies encourage children to be part of a team and it can have a positive impact on their social skills.
Everyone does not get a trophy – Billy and Bob are school mates and Billy plays Rugby on the weekend and Bob stays home and plays on his devices – who gets a trophy at the end of a season?
The winners or “Best Players” still get their recognition with getting the bigger and better trophies – something for the participant to aim towards.
Don't think of a participation trophy as a "thank you for coming" award it is a reward for contribution, effort, consistency and perseverance through out a year.
What do you think?
